Updates that I was too distracted to write about recently...

[startrek.sg 1]
[14 Dec]
Cheryl gave birth to her twins =)

It was our company's DnD at My Secret Garden. The organisers did a good job. There was a greeting party with our Mr Han and Yuan Lue in their Santa Claus and Santarini costumes, giving out door gifts. There was a booth to paint your tatoos. There was good finger food to go around.
The interior and the food disappointed me as I had high expectations. Nevertheless, we had good fun.

I then rushed off to the chalet with our Trek group. We played our own Trek bingo and watched the movie Soldier before we called it quits.

[15 Dec]
I stayed on till midnight when I headed home. I was in danger of falling sick.

Story link here.

[16 Dec]
Finally had my long awaited gathering with Gnel, Yongchin and Wendy at Secret Recipe, Suntec. Everyone was decently happy at where they are right now.

[17-18 Dec]
Finally had to admit to myself that I'm sick =\

[19 Dec, morning]
It's my day-off; I bounced back. I also got "recalled" to office by my users..

[19 Dec, 12:30hrs] - Big5 gathering
I was early; They were late.
We had lunch at Pasta de Waraku. The food was pretty good overall and the service was prompt. It was also revealed that I'm going to have a "brother" - finally! Congrats =)

[20 Dec]
We visited Belachanbabe and her angels. They look healthy and the Wees looked pretty pleased with themselves. We had fun with her parent's WII set but scooted off when their relatives arrived. After that, we had a long chit chat session with Ah Yam and Jinlian before heading home.

Gary n Jane are tying the knot. Congratulations.

Why winning is more important than having fun? -2/2

[Facebook Scrabble]
Having unused words (locally) turn up and cross each other
-Lox created by the placing of Liter
-Pah joined to a crossing of Liter and Vat
-Gox created by placing of Gane
-Moil joined to Rail
-Sone joined to a pairing of Yen, Ten and Gane

[Meanings]
Lox - a kind of brine-cured salmon, having either a salt cure (Scandinavian lox) or a sugar cure (Nova Scotia lox), often eaten with cream cheese on a bagel.
Pah - used as an exclamation of disgust or disbelief
Liter - A metric unit of volume equal to approximately 1.056 liquid quarts, 0.908 dry quart, or 0.264 gallon
Gane - acronym.
1. General Agreement on a New Economy.

Come'on lor!

I told him to stop "cheating" and play "normally". If he takes offense, this game would probably end.

Pam - (placed by me; fed up)
1. the jack of clubs, esp. in a form of loo in which it is the best trump.
2. a game in which this card is trump.

[How this is done]
By placing every possible high-scoring combination and click on "Play Word". The game will disallow illegal placements and incorrect words.

Why winning is more important than having fun? -1/2

I enjoy amateur level of competition. Many mistakes will be made by the players and you see them trying hard. You can almost imagine yourselves in their shoes - playing better of course.

Recently I went to support a friend in her competition. It has a knock out system so the stakes are high. I saw how a few individual talents can lead the team to victory. I saw how the games got rough and unsporting behaviours cropped up.

Yet there's still hope for the dying flame of sportmanship among the teams of the semi-finalists. They check on opponents for injuries. They try to avoid physical contact. They don't trip each other. Nice.

Short update for Oct

[Social]
The events I've planned have come to pass, with less turnout than I wanted.

--Fish n Co
Another meet up with Belinda. This time with Calvin and Germaine. When you put a bunch of ex-colleagues together, what do they talk about? SAP! Makes you almost wanna forgive guys talking about Army, haha.

--Black Society
Service was good. Sadly, I have a drop a notch in their food. Not say the food wasn't good. It was just.. boring. This is a sort of welcome back dinner for Duane.

[Work]
Nothing to do in mid-week and the excitement peaking as the end of the month approaches.
Doris wanted to "hammer me" to treat her team a round of coffee from TCC. I know she was joking but I agreed with the condition that they make no errors till month-end closing. So month-end closing came and there were little errors so I sent them a mail saying that I'm buying, which got them pretty excited.
Then of course, the problems have to hit me hard immediately after. Bish... Nevermind la, it's just a tiny mistake which grew big because too many people tried to fix it. It's still a small mistake. After my users' excitement at the coffee, they then said it's too expensive, said I don't have to buy...
Haha, Gals... I'll be just getting the coffees I think is interesting for them on Monday.

Between Myth 2 and Facebook, I don't have much time!

Red Cross + Star Trek Sg Blood Donation Recruitment Drive

[startrek.sg 1]
http://www.startrek.com.sg/news2007/07-10-06.html
[adjusted Nova's number of donations from 14 to 40]

I have been avoiding blood donations whenever James asked me; I cannot stand the thought of a broad needle breaking into my veins. I am supportive of the idea but you would have to put me on gas and coma for 2 days so that when I wake up, I am none the worse for it.

For nothing better to do, I offered myself as a helper. We offered our costumers to take photos for them and we would print it out as a gift to them - as a token of appreciation. This comes out from James's pockets, a price he's willing to pay for the promotion of the club.

When approached, most people are wary of the weirdos in Star Wars uniforms (not!). Half of them were probably swayed by the fact that "it's free!". Nevertheless, they were pretty on when preparing for the shot, posing with props and all. In all, we printed about 50 photos, using up 1 box of refills and 1 ink cartridge.

After we closed down the photo taking counter, Nova and Dr EMH (aka James) then took their turn to be blood donors. Nova is a regular with 40 past donations; Dr EMH has 3. The staff attending us recognised them and was a very friendly person. It was an eye-opener, witnessing the procedure of blood taking. Restrict the blood; Disinfect; Penetrate (Eeks!); Take blood samples; Drain. It was over in a few minutes.

Once the bleeding stopped, an armband was tied around the elbow. We said goodbye to the staff and went to the recreation room given to us to change and rest. After that, we had the famous steam fish head from Outram Market. Mission completed.

We bought WII!

Or rather I bought; Or rather he bought.

Gaga was going crazy about it, so I was forced to "share" the set with him. After asking around, the prices are almost the same but one shop in Sim Lim Square won us with their flexibility. Our condition - "Give us Zelda instead of the crappy games." We were willing to exchange the 2 free games for it. Guess what? They let us choose any 2 games of our choice, Zelda: Twilight Princess included! Whoopie! Sold!

Now I'm at Gaga's house setting up the compact, cool little gameset. We're almost done. The obstacle is the wires. Hmm...

Pillage the Village

Be good. Be bad. Be nothing.
http://www.xgenstudios.com/play/pillage

Pillage the Village features ragdoll physics, gesture recognition, and visceral, satisfying gameplay differentiating it from anything else out there.

The story in Pillage The Village picks up before the events of the classic Defend Your Castle, and offers some explanation as to why the attacking horde attempts to destroy you with such vehemence and zealotry.

Your actions have consequences. Take a moral stand and fight for the pacifist way or indulge in your deep desires and walk the path of the antagonist. Either path includes a plethora of useful spells, upgrades and abilities.

WCG 2007: Asia Tournament

[startrek.sg 1]
World Cyber Games is being held at Suntec City this weekend. MovieMania organised a Costume Convention and competition to be one of the events. I was roped in by the local unofficial StarTrek fan club to help fill up numbers.

While in the midst of waiting, I managed to catch a match between Singapore's and Malaysia's Counter-Strike teams. A nation to nation rivalry that unites people; that divides people. They had to play a best-of-31 matches. The first time the Malaysian team won, the audience clapped at their brilliance. Later, it became a situation where the left side clapped for Singapore while the right side clapped for Malaysia. Taking note of 2 of the sponsors, I can't help being amused that I am working for them even while off-duty.

Scoring an easy win

Despite all the talk about sportsmanship, people love easy victories.

When Singapore was gripped by the fervour of the Tiger Cup from 1997-1998, fans would often look forward to the match between their national players and the Brunei national squad. With a great disparity in skill levels, fans expect a score of nothing less than 10-0. If they do, then the coach would have angry fans to answer to.

In war histories, the most remembered battles are those when one side inflicted an extremely heavy toll due to the utter inability of the other side to defend themselves. Yet we praise them and study their tactics.

Twice, we were invited by boys in LAN shop to play a match of DotA. When we replied that we are still learning the ropes, they would claim that they too, are just newbies. The first group laughed themselves silly whenever we got killed. The second group had the cheek to suggest a match between 5 of them against 3 of us. When we insisted on a fair number, they sent their weakest member over. Whether he was dying on purpose during the game was something I wondered.

--this post is brought about by Kelly's complaint: one of the disgusting guys finally dragged him into his first game of DotA but refused to team up with him...

Little kids squabbling

[background]
For several days, I have been taking the behaviour of two of
BarbaryCoast's friends quite personally. At first, when they started attacking Barb's style of play, I enjoyed it. However, I soon find them lacking in sportsmanship and they are free with barbs, taunts and insults. I got mad on his behalf and while though Barb doesn't give a damn, he welcomed my partnership versus them.
They call us
noobs. I intend to use our streak of wins against them to stuff their mouths.

Current situation:
-We're playing a 5v5 match. Barb and I are the good guys. Coldsg is on the evil side. His buddy is absent.

Barb chose to sit out of this little fight. His defense against them is to stay mum. I'm the one getting outraged...

We won :)
Too bad we have to kill Strife88 (Magina the anti mage) along with the ugly troll.

Sunday's Dota Fest - Ow....

[post has been edited]

After playing 10 games, my right index finger doesn't feel so well.

The highlight of last night was playing against a team that included two obnoxious players. They thrashed us silly, called us noobs. They conveniently forgot that they had the advantage of greater numbers. We played cat and mouse with them. We won. Priceless.

Some players are apparently plucked out of the stone age. When you tell them to stop insulting other players and show some sportsmanship, they'll laugh and ask, "For pros?..."
Oh joy.

Belated bday for Gaga

The seven of us are finally together after some time. We had a slow lazy BBQ which was interrupted at the latter half when a monkey came along. After an hour of standoff, it was almost comical for the monkey to be distracted by an ice cube. It enjoyed it so much that he took it up the tree to suck on it.

We cleared up and headed to another spot to play Munckin. We backstabbed each other for 2 hours before Roger joined us. We then took another hour triple-stabbing each other before we let Ah yam win...

Finally, we ended our day at a restaurant with not-so-nice dumplings. The ending highlight of the night was, "Do you know the price of your wife's ring should be 2.5 times your salary?"

Uncharted waters 2

Uncharted waters 2.
I was obsessed with this old game for the last few weeks. It's a trading game, a RPG game and a political game rolled into one.

I am Joao Franco, son of Duke Franco of Portugal. At the age of 18, my father gave a ship and his right hand man and ordered me to discover the secrets of Atlantis. After 6 years, I'm now a Duke by my king's grace and have circled the world twice. As a reward for helping Ali reunite with his sister, he has set me on the right path. I now have to raise a mighty fleet to defend the descendants of Atlantis from the Turks.

[post has been back-dated]

I set my alarm(mother) for 7am but simply couldn't wake up. I broke my taxi ban and arrived at Fort Canning Centre at 10am, finding the booth set-up and the guys there. It wasn't air-conditioned as we expected and the traffic was lacklustre. Hence, we didn't bother to dress up. Sales was poor by Dr EMH was more excited about promoting the club. It's kind of cute when we aroused the "passion" in a "Star Trek: The Original Series" fan.

First contact dinner with Trekkie from Phoenix Arizona

[startrek.sg 1]
[pictures added][post has been edited]

I arrived an hour later than the rest and found most of them there. I was introduced to David and Ailing from the States. Seated with them was James, Fahmi and Sam. Seated with me was Kiangsheng and Samantha. We were later joined by Veera.
David is an active fan who has participated in 30 conventions. He was visiting Singapore so he wrote to James on meeting up with the local fan group. Ailing is his local guide.
The venue was Masala Art restaurant. The food there catered to both vegetarians and non vegetarians alike. It was nice and the service was good.
After David and Ailing left, we discussed the charity fair on the 31st March, which I had earlier volunteered myself as a helper. James tried to recruit Samatha and Veera as well. He managed to secure her promise to reappear as a Vulcan.

"So now we have a Vulcan. What can Joran be?"
Uh-oh...

"How about an Andorian?"
Yikes!
"Oh, the one with the blue skin and antenna? Might be quite hard to make"
"Actually..."

"How about a Borg? Is that ok?"
"Ok..."

"Alright! We got a Borg! Now let's see how many of those CPAs (Certified Public Accounts) we can get to buy our stuffs"
"CPAs?..., Veera asked timidly.
"Ya"
"Oh no! I'll be recognised!"
"Haha, I'm the vice president and I dare to appear, what do you have to worry?"
"Don't worry", I said, "Nobody will recognise you"

Faith of the heart: Star Trek Enterprise Opening Song

I know, I know. Nobody likes Trek...

"Enterprise" is the latest series to carry the torch. Like many others, I was surprised by the switch to a song instead of a tune. By the fourth verse, I was won over.

"It's been a long time, getting from there to here.
It's been a long time and my time is finally here."

This perfectly rounds it up how humanity discarded their violent ways and embraced spaceflight as one united race. Yes, the creator had an unrealistic dream - a peaceful human race. But that's what dreaming is all about, isn't it?

If you pay attention to the video, you'll note several historical milestones. Made possible by dreamers.

"The Cage"

Thirteen years before James T. Kirk takes command of the U.S.S. Enterprise, Captain Christopher Pike and his starship crew receive a distress signal from the planet Talos IV and beam down to investigate. Tracking the beacon, the landing party discovers crash survivors from a missing scientific expedition; among the survivors is a beautiful human female, Vina...-Star Trek: The Original Series

"The Cage" is an indoor soccer venue located near Kallang stadium. Our group from Mars and Saturn went there yesterday. I estimate the arena to be 6m x 15m. Our spectators were LaLa, Huiying, Cecila, Lihong and Serena.
At kick off, everyone went for the ball - Brazilian style. We lost our wind barely 5 min into play. By the 15th minute, the first to bow out for substitution was our team lead - Big Satan. I longed for my chance as fresh legs were brought into this fierce 5 x 5 match. By the fourth substitution, I took up the role of Goal keeper and gave a perfectly abysmal showing. I had a decent save, got a nice bruise on the joint of my little finger and let in 3 goals. When Debugger arrived, I was glad for the chance to escape.
I chatted with the girls and tried to be invisible as people swapped in and out. Think I smoked out for about 45 min before I played for the final 30 min. The team compositions have changed but Eric and Kelvin remained my opponents. A pattern has already set in and our side had 2 good strikers that did all the work while the rest of tried to act the part.

Today, Eric and Big Satan came in complaining about aches. I had a nice collection of bruises to show. Pat wanted to make it a monthly event. The next booking was set to be on 15th Jan.
I think I need some armour pieces...

03 January 2007

2007 first post

I bet everyone have a "first post", so here it goes.

Last year was the most complain-some year I had on work. I gave up a cosy position and stepped out into a world where I had to fend for myself. The pay difference isn't such a big deal, only an additional $50/mth. I do wonder if I made the right choice as my old employer would have given me the chance to learn configuration if I had stayed on. In the outside world, NOBODY wants to give you a chance. "You got no experience", they say. "I am willing to learn! I am willing to take a pay-cut!", I offered to cold stone faces. But if a secure job is what I am looking for, then this is the right move.

In gaming, my money found new outlets. Arcade centres collected $100 in MarioKart Racing alone. The Pirates! game cost me about $130 in cards and accessories. PC games purchases fell to $100 (Purchase of Cheryl's copy does not count) - the lowest ever since the age of 22.

The outdoor yearning got a bit of satisfaction last year with night cycling, snorkelling, hiking, water rafting and sneaking past dogs. I don't think I wish to conquer my fear of jellies, it can stay, thank you.

Luck wise I have been pretty fine. No handphone losses, no serious heartbreaks, little backstabbing... Only piece of back luck was the sprain, which I must be the slowest healing person on record.

2007.. the continuing story
