A game or a screen saver? A Knight's Story 2

A game or a screen saver?  A Knight's Story 2.

Joran: Usually I don't post up a game if I think it sucks.  This game, however, deserve some slamming from me.
This game sells itself as an idle game - meaning you are meant to take it easy and play it over a long period of time with little player involvement.
At start, you choose a character and name it.  Then you make an all important decision to step out of your home city.  Aye, step out and you might die.  Stay and you might live, till our fossil fuels run out.  So you step out.
Once you've done that, you meet monsters and fight them.  This will take a minute and done automatically.  Once that monster has been slain.  Wait another minute for a new monster.  If you kill it, great!  Wait another minute.  If you die.  Wait a minute while you get teleported to your home city and you can make the all important decision again.  Travel from screen 0 to screen 1?
100 minutes later, you wonder if you can see new scenery.  Yes you may.  Wait one minute to step to a new piece of land and one minute later, you meet a powerful monster who will let you enjoy a one minute teleportation to your home city.  Travel from screen 0 to screen 1?
500 minutes later, you wounder if you can finally see new scenery.  Yes you may.  Spend one minute to travel and hey!  You actually can!  You are now in screen 2!  All in 500 minutes, no sweat.

An idle game with no effort from you.  Only having to make the decision to step out from screen 0 to screen 1 and let the game do the rest.  Died?  Move out and watch the show.  Died again?  Move out and watch the show.  The game can't get more engaging than this.

Battle of Ia Drang Valley - Day 1, post publicity post by Zeonic

Battle of Ia Drang Valley - Day 1, post publicity post by Zeonic

Arrived at SX. Geared up at The Stronghold. Encountered multiple swarms of mosquitoes. Insect repellent supplies depleted rapidly.

Combat area recced. Dense vegetation with patches of soft soil. Emerged from steaming jungle thinking we already won the war.

Battle commenced. Elimination game. Team Chak outnumbered Opfor 2 to 1. Situation excellent. Team Chak broke up into several smaller teams and advances into the jungle. Losses mount rapidly. Zeonic and Kongba flanked to the left and managed to take out two Opfor. Joran was missing and assumed dead. Game ends with 4 members of Team Chak surviving versus 2 for Opfor. Game goes to Team Chak.

Break for lunch at the club house. Penang Fried Kuay Teow was preferred over Chicken Chop. Lime juice was refreshing.

Second game begins. Team Chak was to capture Foxhole 1, establish spawn point and then proceed to primary objective of activating the siren at the Sniper Tree. Team Chak moved out in a long skirmishing line with both flanks moving forward ahead of the centre. Despite encountering automatic fire from the bunkers, Team Chak was able to focus overwhelming firepower on Opfor positions. Foxhole 1 taken. Sniper Tree was raining fire down and doing serious headshots. Team Chak overrunned the Sniper Tree and activated the siren. Game goes to Team Chak. Minimum losses to Team Chak.

Third game begins. Team Chak to defend Foxhole 1 position. Opfor will be attacking. Team Chak splits up and hold key positions around Foxhole 1. Opfor begins with a diversionary attack at the front, while two teams come from the flanks. Team Chak holds the left and centre positions. Opfor 3 men team flanking from the right penetrates into the defensive perimeter. Chak and Zeonic managed to hold them for a while, eliminating one. The other two took the right bunker and was holding higher ground. Accurate fire took out Zeonic and Chak. Team Chak was all but wiped out, with only 2 ladies still defending the primary objective. They fought to the very end. Game goes to Opfor.

Cleaned up and convoy moved to Jusco for some grilled Mahi mahi and Hohoho sauce.

Battle of Ia Drang Valley - Day 1, post publicity post

Battle of Ia Drang Valley - Day 1.
Date: 6 Dec
Venue: Austin hills, JB, West Malaysia.
event url: http://www.facebook.com/events.php?ref=sb#/event.php?eid=170431562461&index=1

The movie 'We Were Soldiers' starring Mel Gibson based on the book 'We were soldiers once, and young' recounted the events of this battle as the US Army's fought its first pitched battle in Vietnam against the NVA and VC.

The Battle of Ia Drang Valley - Day 1, will attempt to recreate the desperate fighting on the first day of this engagement. Subsequent months will see the events of Day 2, etc. recreated.

The more experienced players formed a team; let's call them OPFOR. While Wargh!Nuts chose to join the newbies to balance things out. Azman and his daughters also joined up to form Blue force.  8 v 19.

mission brief

Azman and daughters

game 1
Elimination round.
At first, OPFOR made several kills easily from BF's scattered patrols.  Then BF put up a stubborn resistance in a ditch.  OPFOR managed to take out Azlan, with a loss of one of the OPFOR.  13 v 7.
Two of the OPFOR happened to run out of rounds at the same time and while their reloading actions were caught by Kongba.  Together with Zeonic, they managed to take them out.  11 v 5.
From then on, things look better and Blue force "won" with a count of 4 v 2.

game 2
Attack round.
Since Blue force was perceived to be the weaker team, they were given the choice of respawning once they captured the foxhole.  Their objective, however is to capture a tree house.

Blue force decided to ignore the re-spawn point and head straight for the objective.  5 men each was placed on each flank.  The center column consists of 8 men.  In practice, Blue force practically moved as a line.  One lady from BF sat out of this game while Xterix decided to join the fray, taking the side of OPFOR.  18 v 9.
The first resistance encountered was 2 defenders behind a log.  They exposed their position when the attackers got closed enough but they did not expect to be pinned down by pellets that came from 3 sides.  One by one, the defending positions were overrun.  OPFOR managed to outflank BF's right and took out 3 attackers.  15 v 7.
Joran for some strange reasons, exposed himself in the open when advancing - to be pinned down by defending fire, only to repeat his actions after he was saved by his comrades.  17 v 2.
When BF reached the treehouse, the last ambush was sprang and OPFOR took out 2 attackers (Joran included.  He later explained his baiting actions due to a gas feed problem).  The combined firepower of 16 markers cleared the treehouse and scored a cleared victory for BF.  16 v 0.

Since this was a game of respawns for BF, we should look at the kills instead.
BF's kills: 9
OPFOR's kills: 6

video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NU7Yg__tH3c

game 3
defence round
Blue force was tasked with guarding a foxhole this time.  Zeonic wanted to repeat the previous tactics but Chak voted for defense.  2 rings of defenders were placed around the objective.  Xterix decided to play on, taking the side of OPFOR.  9 v 19.
Sporadic exchanges came from BF's 11 o'clock position and moved slowly towards their 1 o'clock position.  Defenders got taken out slowly via sniper fire.  8 v 16.
Joran learnt the unfortunate lesson that paintballs does travel through a bush sometimes.  Under advice from his ghost, 2 defenders went about in a flanking move.  They got a 1 to 1 exchange.  7 v 15.
OPFOR continued probing the defenses of BF.  They were now attacking from the 3 o'clock and 6 o'clock positions.  The camp was missing 3 men from a flanking maneuver and currently numbers at 12.  In a surprise move, the 3 o'clock position was overran and the defenses collapsed.  The ladies in the foxhole fought to the end.  The siren was sounded from the foxhole and the flanking defenders realised they arrived too late.  7 v 2.

One of the more enjoyable woodsgame I've played to date.  Compared to Bukit Ramly, this venue have more options for movements and flanking.  Each side had their "perfect" game so everyone went around happy.  I'll probably go for another game next time.

Special thanks:

After slamming the game for all the bad design decisions in May 09, the game has shown marked improvements.
Game points must be earned online, thus encouraging players to leave the game running by itself for hours and hours.
Game points can now be earned offline.  Popularity can't.

Toilets get dirty after every 3 uses, forcing you to clean it every 2-3 minutes if you have a small restaurant and do not have an array of toilets.  Forcing you to babysit your game.
Toilets can now be cleaned by players' interactions.

 Newer stuffs:
Plates can be cleared by players' interactions.

Joran: The designers have finally realised that forcing players to micro-mange their staff is NOT fun.  The game is now actually somewhat fun.  Is it too little, too late, however?

Players Association in SG?

Players Association in SG?

This is a scheduled post

Hi guys,
let's dust the cover of this topic.

We as the players have to look after our own interests. If left in the hand of field operators, things would not improve to our satisfaction.
Our suggestions in the past were not followed up. Could our collective voice urge them to change? Could we persuade new fields to emerge?

Let's talk!

Star Trek Nemesis's "Shinzon blames the movie's poor performance for depression.

After Star Trek: Nemesis flopped at the box office, Hardy, thought to be the “Next Big Thing,” descended into alcohol and crack addition, which cost him his marriage. “I went entirely off the rails and I’m lucky I didn’t have some terrible accident or end up in prison or dead, because that’s where I was going,” he said. “Now I know my beast and I know how to manage it.

Joran: crap sia...

Different types of Paintball

Different types of Paintball.
What are the different types of Paintball that you can play?

1. Rec-ball
Recreational Paintball is usually labeled as Scenario Paintball by field operators.  2 teams compete in a level field filled with obstacles.  The objective usually involves completing goals rather than shooting at the opponents.  There's no need to purchase your own gear as they're provided.
example of Rec-ball: http://joranatplay.blogspot.com/2009/09/rec-game-of-paintball-focus-adventure.html

There're currently 3 operators in Singapore.  This should serve as an introduction to paintball for most players.
comparision of prices: http://joranatplay.blogspot.com/2009/08/recreation-paintball-in-singapore.html
You should be able to find a Rec-ball field in Bintan.   Malaysia's fields are mostly catered for Speed-ball and do not cater for Rec-ball.  There's one at Denga Mall but be careful of traveling alone around the area at night.

2. Speed-ball
To most inductees to Rec-ball, this would be a natural progression as it garners the most headlines.  While Rec-ball is played by casual players, Speed-ball is played by skilled amateurs who form teams to compete on a regular basis.  They get somewhat cheaper prices from the field operators due to their patronage.  There are no re-spawns here; dead players proceed to the Dead Man's box till the end of the match.  Players also purchase their personal gear costing between $50 to $500 on average.  Paintball Markers are still provided by the operators as personal ownership is illegal in Singapore.

Currently, Red Dynasty holds a monopoly on Speed-ball in Singapore.  The only place you can play it is in BottleTree ParkMalaysia's fields mostly cater to Speed-ball and you can play it at 1/4 the costs of Singapore's.

3. Woods-ball
According to Paintball lore, it was Woods-ball that gave birth to this sports.  Appealing to Mil-Sim enthusiasts, these games can range from 20 to 200 in the regional scene.  Players sport camouflage gear and communication devices.  Casual players can also join in easily as it is a team game and equipment is provided.  A most satisfying outcome is a perfectly executed ambush.

Example of a big event: http://joranatplay.blogspot.com/2009/07/bt-big-game-tour-2009-bio-gotcha.html

The game I join: Operation Busted Cherry:
my version: http://joranatplay.blogspot.com/2009/01/op-busted-cherry-brief.html
Xterix's version: http://wargh.net/portal/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=38&Itemid=9

Currently, you can only play Woods-ball in Malaysia.  The local operator that I usually patronage is Wargh. http://wargh.net/portal/index.php

If you're reading this, you probably have been exposed to paintball.  Our objective as players is to win through teammate, not inflict pain upon each other; these can be reduced by a simple show of sportsmanship.
Each game type have their merits; my dilemma is recorded here: http://joranatplay.blogspot.com/2009/04/speedball-or-woodsball.html
I urge you to give each a try as they each have their attractions.
Thank you.

The only way to make our wishes come true?

Spyder Sonic and well maintained.

3 men on duty: Benjamin & Jacqueline hosted the games.

Helicopter in terrorist camp

Trees wide enough to hide 2 pax
A bridge in counter-terrorist camp

Standing and squatting bunkers
Watchtowers (albeit far from action)

Broad horizontally, allows wide angle of play

Counter terrorists have to plant a flag on the bridge.
Terrorists have to slap a bomb on the side of the helicopter hull that is facing the counter terrorists.

The terrorists benefit from having a protected bunker - the helicopter itself. They simply have to run out of the helicopter and slap the bomb on the hull. The counter terrorist got to run up the bridge, a pretty risky move.
The terrorist however, can be locked down by placing men on the far left and right of the field (remember the wide horizontal width?) If they can't enter the heli, they can't win.

A pretty fun field albeit unbalanced. Players looking for a greater mix of strategic depth should consider this field.

Polonium 210: Write-up

Polonium 210: Write-up.
previously: http://joranatplay.blogspot.com/2009/09/polonium-210.html

Saturday, 7.30 pm:
Agent Joran, Henry and Ian (specs) arrived at Liang Court's Reception Counter and met up with Agent ST. After we made sure we were not tailed, we proceeded to MacDonald's to await instructions.

8.00 pm
Senior Agent Xterix arrived and briefed us on our mission.  Our spy-ring in this Capitalist country has been compromised.  Each one of us would be assigned a target.

8.10 pm
Agents Kimchi Brothers gave us envelopes containing our targets and left.  Agent Ian (woodsball) illegally stole a peek at us; marking us as potential foes.

8.20 pm
Our team prepared to move out; checks equipment.

8.30 pm
Betrayed by Agent Henry, Agent Joran was the first casualty.  The team splintered.

8.35 pm
Revived as a member of the mindless Death Squad.  Joran has only one thought - Haunt his killer.

8.40 pm
Joran took up position on the bridge and spotted Agent Henry.  Kept watch.
Agent Ian (specs)'s killer got killed while stalking him.

8.45 pm
Agent Ian (specs) got killed.
Recall of Death Squad members - orders: bring in all agents for questioning.
Agent Henry made his 2nd kill.

8.50 pm
4 agents got killed to date
Agent Henry ran off from Joran at bridge, after the latter told him, "I here here to haunt you".

8.55 pm
Agent ST chanced upon Ian (specs), took one look and immediately leaved him in the dust.  Someone must have warned here that Death Squad members were on the move.
Agent Kelly started stalking Agent Henry.

9.05 pm
Joran continued his haunt of Agent Henry.

9.15 pm
Agent Kelly started stalking Agent Henry.

9.20 pm
Joran started searching for Agent ST.
Agent Henry, who was avoiding Joran, walked after him.
Agent Kelly, who was stalking Agent Henry, followd.
Agent Kelly got killed by his assigned killer, who was following him.

9.25 pm
No one has seen Agent ST.  The order went out to arrest her.
Agent Kelly got revived as a Death Squad member.

9.35 pm

Kelly arrested Agent ST.
Agent ST's assigned target got arrested.

9.40 pm
Agent ST made her first kill.
Joran started to haunt Agent ST.
Agent Ian (woodsball) got arrested by the Death Squad.  He was found in the bushes.

9.50 pm
Agent ST stalked her target to the toilet and made her 2nd kill.  However, a quirk in the knife assigned to the agents was that you got to know the identity of your victim, else he doesn't die straight away

10.00 pm
Agent Henry got killed, with a total of 3 kills.  His killer was supposed to be dead.

10.15 pm
The game ends.
Agent ST was the last standing assassin.
Agent Henry had the highest number of kills, at 3.
A second game was supposed to have followed but Joran, Henry, Ian (specs) and ST decided to call it a day.

Most of us have an axe to grind with some people. Poking from behind a screen of Anonymity is bad taste, however.

If you play speedball and staying in Singapore, why aren't you playing locally?
