When Penguins Attack

When Penguins Attack.
TD game - the type where you can lay mazes.

Likes: cute critters and nice weapon effects.
Dislikes: lack of info on how much an upgrade will affect the tower.  No "Send Next Wave" feature.

Rec game of paintball @ Focus Adventure Camp Site Sembawang

Rec game of paintball @ Focus Adventure Camp Site Sembawang.
edit: photos link and credit

Markers:
Spyder Sonic and well maintained.

Crew:
3 men on duty: Benjamin & Jacqueline hosted the games.

Obstacles:

Helicopter in terrorist camp

Trees wide enough to hide 2 pax
A bridge in counter-terrorist camp

Standing and squatting bunkers
Watchtowers (albeit far from action)

Field:
Broad horizontally, allows wide angle of play

Gameplay:
Counter terrorists have to plant a flag on the bridge.
Terrorists have to slap a bomb on the side of the helicopter hull that is facing the counter terrorists.

Tactics:
The terrorists benefit from having a protected bunker - the helicopter itself. They simply have to run out of the helicopter and slap the bomb on the hull. The counter terrorist got to run up the bridge, a pretty risky move.
The terrorist however, can be locked down by placing men on the far left and right of the field (remember the wide horizontal width?) If they can't enter the heli, they can't win.

Overall:
A pretty fun field albeit unbalanced. Players looking for a greater mix of strategic depth should consider this field.

Polonium 210: Write-up

Polonium 210: Write-up.
previously: http://joranatplay.blogspot.com/2009/09/polonium-210.html

Saturday, 7.30 pm:
Agent Joran, Henry and Ian (specs) arrived at Liang Court's Reception Counter and met up with Agent ST. After we made sure we were not tailed, we proceeded to MacDonald's to await instructions.

8.00 pm
Senior Agent Xterix arrived and briefed us on our mission.  Our spy-ring in this Capitalist country has been compromised.  Each one of us would be assigned a target.

8.10 pm
Agents Kimchi Brothers gave us envelopes containing our targets and left.  Agent Ian (woodsball) illegally stole a peek at us; marking us as potential foes.

8.20 pm
Our team prepared to move out; checks equipment.

8.30 pm
Betrayed by Agent Henry, Agent Joran was the first casualty.  The team splintered.

8.35 pm
Revived as a member of the mindless Death Squad.  Joran has only one thought - Haunt his killer.

8.40 pm
Joran took up position on the bridge and spotted Agent Henry.  Kept watch.
Agent Ian (specs)'s killer got killed while stalking him.

8.45 pm
Agent Ian (specs) got killed.
Recall of Death Squad members - orders: bring in all agents for questioning.
Agent Henry made his 2nd kill.

8.50 pm
4 agents got killed to date
Agent Henry ran off from Joran at bridge, after the latter told him, "I here here to haunt you".

8.55 pm
Agent ST chanced upon Ian (specs), took one look and immediately leaved him in the dust.  Someone must have warned here that Death Squad members were on the move.
Agent Kelly started stalking Agent Henry.

9.05 pm
Joran continued his haunt of Agent Henry.

9.15 pm
Agent Kelly started stalking Agent Henry.

9.20 pm
Joran started searching for Agent ST.
Agent Henry, who was avoiding Joran, walked after him.
Agent Kelly, who was stalking Agent Henry, followd.
Agent Kelly got killed by his assigned killer, who was following him.

9.25 pm
No one has seen Agent ST.  The order went out to arrest her.
Agent Kelly got revived as a Death Squad member.

9.35 pm

Kelly arrested Agent ST.
Agent ST's assigned target got arrested.

9.40 pm
Agent ST made her first kill.
Joran started to haunt Agent ST.
Agent Ian (woodsball) got arrested by the Death Squad.  He was found in the bushes.

9.50 pm
Agent ST stalked her target to the toilet and made her 2nd kill.  However, a quirk in the knife assigned to the agents was that you got to know the identity of your victim, else he doesn't die straight away

10.00 pm
Agent Henry got killed, with a total of 3 kills.  His killer was supposed to be dead.

10.15 pm
The game ends.
Agent ST was the last standing assassin.
Agent Henry had the highest number of kills, at 3.
A second game was supposed to have followed but Joran, Henry, Ian (specs) and ST decided to call it a day.

The first 2 sites have been around for a long time so they should be safe to download from.
Wikipedia carries potential risks, so be careful.
The last site is unknown to me.

Regardless, you're advised to take care when downloading stuffs. Make sure you take the necessary precautions.

Mobile Suit Gundam Senjo No Kizuna: 2nd impressions

Mobile Suit Gundam Senjo No Kizuna: 2nd impressions.
previously: http://joranatplay.blogspot.com/2009/09/mobile-suit-gundam-senjo-no-kizuna.html

Today, Chak, Xterix, Laogao and myself went down to have a team training.
We found that we got to go to the ticketing machine to upgrade our Mobile Suits.  We also managed to locked 2 new Mobile Suits.

I found that the Vulcan cannon (by pressing both weapon triggers) have a greater knock down effect than the regular laser pistol.

On trying out the Mobile Suits for close range and medium range, I fared badly.  More study had to be done.

Polonium 210
"If You Have Time To Kill We Have Someone For You"
source: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=128109002502

Joran: I should be joining.  Anyone else?

~
It is a Saturday night, town is packed with couples, families, tourist thronging the busy sidewalks. Somewhere in the crowd is your target. You spotted him earlier but you lost him when a group of tourist swamped all around you.

You look at your watch, its 1146. You have less than 15mins before the contract expires. Your phone rings, you look down and its an unknown number. Do you answer or ignore it... before you can decide, you feel the flat of a 'blade' on your back.

When you checked your phone, that was the confirmation he needed to verify your identity. You have just been eliminated, stabbed in the back by another assassin.

Game Over.
_______________________________________________
Polonium 210 is a Live Action game of Assassins. Everyone in the game is assigned a target, who is someone else in the game.

Locate your target, take him out (with an approved 'weapon). And after eliminating your target, you go after his target. Take out the entire hit list before the contract expires and you win.

Be careful not to hit innocent bystanders and keep an eye out for the 'police' :)

Mobile Suit Gundam Senjo No Kizuna - 機動戦士ガンダム 戦場の絆

Mobile Suit Gundam Senjo No Kizuna - 機動戦士ガンダム 戦場の絆.
Type: FPS
Platform: Arcade
Links: Up to 8 players?

When Chak first highlighted this game to me, I thought it look like a Virtual-On clone. I resolved to take a look.

[First look]
The game cabins looked good. It was spacious, enclosed and clean looking.

[getting started]
Inside the cabin, I found some instructions in English. It said.
1. Insert game card
2. Insert 5 x $1 coins
3. Start

Huh? Where does this game card come from? Does it store credits?

Looking around, I found a machine that dispenses the card. In Japanese, the machine guides you to select your allegiance, your suit colours, your pilot's voice and your name, before asking you to insert 5 x $1. Not exactly user-friendly by having only Japanese language but it's only a one-time frustration.

[booting up]
Back into the machine.  I inserted the game card and told to insert 5 x $1.  Then came a confusing setup screen, all worded in Japanese.  Those familiar with Dynasty Warriors should not no problem working out that this is the setup screen to swap your weapons for those you have unlocked.  For a beginner, this just add confusion.  Simply go to the last option, worded in Chinese, saying "End" - 终了.

[Controls]
Since this has 2 joysticks, I expected it to play by Cyber-Command and Virtual-On.  Pulling the analog sticks in different directions vertically pivots the MobileSuit.  Pushing them both forward walks the suit.  Pushing them together to the left makes you strafe in that direction.  Left peddle makes you fly.  Right peddle makes you dash.  The right trigger lets you choose your lock-on target.

That's all I managed to discover as there was no tutorial and the game throws you into the game straight away.

[Gameplay]
In many ways, this plays like existing Gundam games in 2D.  It even looks like them.  However, the panoramic view was great as I found myself often having to look around.

I noted that my weapon damage was pretty light and I can only deal so much damage at one time before my opponent falls to the ground.  There has to be something I'm not doing right!

video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yscxJQDaWL8

[Round 1]
I killed 2 enemy MobileSuits and some bar fills up, telling me I leveled up.  No new weapons though.

[Round 2]
I killed 1 enemy MobileSuit and the bar was incomplete at about 95%.  My game was over.

[Afterthoughts]
The polish is good on this one, albeit with outdated graphics.  The game suffers from the presenting the information only in Japanese, or that the local importers were simply too lazy.  However, I still feel frustrated at not having to get access to proper instructions somewhere.
I might give this game another try next week.
