Cajoling for woodsball.

I think I'm tired.
All those affirmatives translated to nothing again.
All I wanted to do is spread my love for the sports.

Your Daily McMaster: violence in the machine

Your Daily McMaster: violence in the machine.

I looked above and noticed a walkway. The wind had been kicking up pretty high and the rat must have been tossed off and fallen. It was still alive but it looked like its legs had broken in the fall. It was breathing heavily and looked afraid. I meant to make for my car as the storm was intensifying, but I couldn’t. I stood there frozen, staring down at a dying creature. The look in its eyes made my heart lurch. Thus my internal struggle began. My first thought, as it always is with any hurt animal, was to take it to a vet. That was pushed immediately aside when I pictured bringing a dying city rat into a clinic. Easily dismissed. I moved on to option two – put it out of its misery. I looked around for something to use to kill the poor creature. I found a brick and picked it up. I even raised it a bit in the air, but in the end I couldn’t do it. No amount of zombie killing prepared me to take the basest creature’s life. The rain was starting.

If you care about a particular game or sports, then you wouldn't like to hear accusations of cheating.
The insulting part comes when the person repeats his or her accusations, after you protested your innocence.

Tom vs Bruce: Wargame: Airland Battle

Tom vs Bruce: Wargame: Airland Battle.

Joran: you can read about it here.  Finally, an article that is a real fight, and not marred by bugs.
And for once, Bruce put up a pretty good fight.

Project Update #26: Next Tom vs. Bruce posting today

Project Update #26: Next Tom vs. Bruce posting today.
Joran: Sigh...

The next Tom vs. Bruce is being posted on this (Monday morning), and we wanted to update you on how everything is going. While the road to Tristram is littered with good intentions, and nobody is happy with the delay in getting this one posted, Bruce is absolutely willing to take the blame for this latest delay. While job-related delays are unavoidable, Bruce doesn't want Tom to get any more grief for the slowdowns that he is not primarily guilty of. And in case you think Tom is throwing Bruce under the bus in an update, this is Bruce writing this. The good news on the T-shirt front is that thanks to one of our fine backers, we got a very reasonable quote from a screenprinter, and the payment should be made by the time this update is posted. We will be contacting all the T-shirt backers for address updates to make sure no one's reward gets lost in the mail. Between Tom and Bruce, neither one of us is happy that we haven't gotten into a groove, but we continue to try to remedy that. At the least, we plan to do more than the ten we promised, and will very likely do a "special edition" just for backers. We're committed to getting these out on a regular basis, even if it means doing several at once while we have the time. Bruce is forgoing some vacation travel next month to take advantage of the free time. So yes, we do take this seriously. Hope you enjoy this latest one.

The Peacekeeper

Joran: Apologies for lack of updates.  Life just got busy and will increasingly so.

The Peacekeeper
Shooter; Defense game.
Joran: A lightweight defense game that is kinda entertaining.  Shoot and duck like Time Crisis.
Dislike: Too little enemy types.  Latter stage consists of grinding for gold.

RIP 1Up.Com

RIP 1Up.Com

The corporate version:
Today, Ziff-Davis announced that as part of a restructuring of its new property IGN Entertainment, three of IGN's smaller secondary sites -- namely, 1UP.com, Gamespy.com, and UGO.com -- would be "winding down." As is often the case with such reorganizations, some of 1UP's staff was laid off while others will be moving over to work as contributors at IGN.com. No timeline was given for 1UP's closure or if its servers would continue to run indefinitely.

Galaxy Siege

Galaxy Siege.
Bottom-up scroller.

Like: Ship design; grabbing arms
Grabbing arms become obsolete;
once critical size is reached, there is no need to maneuver;
there's no need to invest in fuel tanks to last the whole run, as you can complete the map in stages;
winning the final boss is a matter of finding the right build;
no tactical value in placement of soft components.

Joran: Such a pity.  3 stars.
play: http://jayisgames.com/games/galaxy-siege/

1. Recommended starting layout; spread your grabbing arms as wide as possible.

2. Grabbing arms are cute

3. Spinning out of control cos my ship is out of fuel.  No matter, I can still fight!

4. My final combination.  Get the 2nd best weapon (aka 3-way cannon), with lots of damage enhancers.  Skip the best weapon (aka 3-way missile).

Metacritic Matters: How Review Scores Hurt Video Games

Metacritic Matters: How Review Scores Hurt Video Games.
Joran: A well thought and researched article.

Perhaps it’s in our nature to make numbers out of everything. And it’s hard to deny that Metacritic is a useful tool for measuring how a small group of people felt about a game at one particular point. But it’s not a useful tool for much else. There are too many variables, too many people trying to manipulate the system. There’s too much subjectivity in the review process for anyone to treat it like an objective measure of quality. Video games are designed to be personal experiences, and it is disingenuous for publishers to act like review scores are any more than the quantification of those personal experiences. It’s harmful to everyone. Everyone.

The Best of Both Worlds Blu-ray transforms the fan-favorite two-part TNG saga that featured the Borg into a re-edited 90-minute feature-length experience. Extras include “Regeneration: Engaging the Borg,” which examines the creation of the formidable Trek enemy and features interviews with TNG cast, producers, writers, visual effects staff and makeup artists. Fans will also enjoy an audio commentary with director Cliff Bole, Mike and Denise Okuda, and guest star Elizabeth Dennehy. And, just for fun, there’s a gag reel culled from recently discovered original negatives.
